Transforming Loss into Purpose

A Conversation with Sara Aumann

On this week’s podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kelli Komondor, a visibility strategist and consultantOn this week’s podcast, I had the profound opportunity to speak with Sara Aumann, a soul and sound healer who transformed her own journey through grief into a mission to help others navigate life’s most challenging transitions. Our conversation explored the healing power of sound, the physical impact of grief, and how loss can ultimately redirect us toward our true purpose.

The Transformative Power of Profound Loss

Sara shared her experience of losing her father, two brothers, grandfather, and a pregnancy all within a 16-month period in 2015. This “dark night of the soul” became a catalyst for her spiritual awakening and shifted her path from being a world traveler who had explored 54 countries to eventually becoming a soul-led entrepreneur. Sara explained how death can be “a beautiful mirror to look at what’s not fulfilled for you” and how these losses helped align her more deeply with her true calling.

Soul and Sound Healing: From Childhood Intuition to Spiritual Practice

We delved into Sara’s journey as a sound healer, which began when she was just three years old, singing intuitively to her dying grandmother. Sara described how sound healing became a natural extension of her gifts: “I’ve always been a singer. I’ve always loved singing. I’ve always sang to soothe myself when I’m happy, when I’m sad.” She explained the difference between energy healing and soul healing, with the latter focusing on addressing the root causes of pain and suffering.

The Physical Impact of Grief and Creating Space for Healing

Our conversation took a personal turn as I shared my recent experience with my mother’s passing. Sara offered valuable insights about how grief manifests physically, particularly in the lungs, which in Traditional Chinese Medicine are considered to carry grief. “Grief takes an enormous amount of energy,” Sara explained, highlighting why we often feel depleted when processing loss and the importance of creating space for ourselves during the grieving process.

Honoring the Complexity of Relationships After Death

We discussed the importance of creating meaningful death rituals that honor the full truth of our relationships. As Sara wisely noted, it’s about acknowledging “everything they were, everything they weren’t.” I shared my experience of creating a three-day ritual for my mother, which gave family members an opportunity to process their grief and find completion. This led to a beautiful conversation about transforming inherited patterns rather than simply returning them.

Inviting Ancestral Support in the Healing Journey

One of the most profound insights Sara shared was about connecting with those who have passed: “The beauty of someone being in the soul world is you can invite their soul at any time to practice with you, chant with you, heal with you. And our ancestors really do want to come and support us.” This perspective offers a powerful way to continue our relationship with loved ones who have passed while working through our own healing.

Living Aligned with Purpose: The Question That Changes Everything

Sara posed a powerful question she often asks in her work: “What would be unfulfilled for you if you died tomorrow?” She shared a poignant story about asking this question to college students who responded, “We wouldn’t have even lived.” This led to a meaningful discussion about aligning with our soul’s purpose and making choices that lead to fewer regrets. As Sara noted, “Nobody says they wish they worked harder or held that grudge longer” at the end of their life.

Key Takeaways

Our conversation with Sara offered valuable insights for navigating grief and finding purpose. Here are the key takeaways:

  • Create rituals and ceremonies that honor the complexity of relationships with those who’ve passed
  • Recognize grief’s physical impact and give yourself space and gentleness during the process
  • Consider how ancestral souls can be invited to participate in your healing journey
  • Transform inherited patterns rather than simply carrying or returning them
  • Use loss as an opportunity to clarify and pursue what truly matters to you

Sara’s journey is a powerful reminder that even our darkest moments can become portals to discovering our true purpose. Her experience demonstrates how we can transform profound grief into a mission to serve others and live more authentically aligned with our soul’s calling.
